East Coast seal hunt opens in southern Gulf of St. Lawrence
Published Monday March 23rd, 2009
CAP-AUX-MEULES, Que. - The East Coast seal hunt got underway Monday in the ice floes of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence around Quebec's Iles de la Madeleine, although weather was hindering the efforts of anti-hunt observers.
About 20 sealing vessels from the islands ventured out to sea, while some land-based hunting was also underway, said Phil Jenkins, a spokesman for the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Jenkins said wind conditions had pushed some of the ice against the shore, meaning part of the seal herd could be reached by hunters on land.
He said the length of the land-based hunt would be determined by the winds that brought the ice to shore in the first place.
"If the wind does turn around it'll push that particular herd that's up against the islands off into the gulf more, and probably disperse them a bit," said Jenkins.
He said winds were picking up and snow was also in the forecast.
Jenkins said the combination of weather and ice conditions would determine the length of a hunt that could take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
"It can go very quickly if everything is concentrated on ice pans that are stable . . . but if things get dispersed, I think last year the hunt went on for several weeks," said Jenkins.
He later confirmed that it was looking increasingly likely the forecast would delay the start of Tuesday's hunt in the gulf by sealers from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Weather conditions were already playing havoc Monday with plans by anti-sealing organizations to document the hunt.
Officials with the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Humane Society International confirmed high winds had made it impossible to get observer helicopters into the air.
Jenkins said federal officials issued 16 observer permits to journalists and anti-sealing organizations.
Those opposed to the hunt have promised intense scrutiny following a recent decision by a European Parliament committee to endorse a bill that would impose a ban on the import of seal products to the 27-member union.
The decision came despite intense lobbying by Canadian politicians looking to convince the European body that the commercial seal hunt is humane.
About 30 per cent of the 280,000 harp seal quota will be taken in the gulf, while the rest will go to the major hunt off Newfoundland's northern coast, known as the Front, which has yet to begin.
Last year's gulf hunt was overshadowed by the loss of four sealers in the sinking of L'Acadien II on March 29.
The small boat capsized off Cape Breton while under tow by a coast guard icebreaker.
-By Keith Doucette in Halifax
Questions:
1. Where does this seal hunting take place?
2. How long does it last for?
3. Why are some people opposed to sealing?
4. Why would Canada's politicians want the seal hunt to take place anyway?
5. Why do you think these "hunters" put up with the criticism they get for killing seals?
6. Can you think of any other jobs that are unpopular?

Fisherman facing charges in N.S. after seizure of lobster tails
Published Monday March 23rd, 2009
METEGHAN, N.S. - Federal fishery officers in Nova Scotia say they've made a substantial lobster seizure.
Officers confiscated 308 lobster tails at the Meteghan wharf. A fisherman who was apprehended at the wharf will appear in court at a later date.
It's a violation of the Federal Fisheries Act to have tails and claws that have been separated from the body, because it removes the ability for officers to determine the size of the lobster.
The tails were confiscated last Wednesday.
Questions
1. Why did this fisherman get in trouble with the law?
2. Why would he have only lobster tails?
3. Why does the length of caught lobsters matter?
4. Was he affecting others by his decision? If so, how?
